Associate Director

Dr. Chantel Long, is from the nearby community of Ellsworth, KS – a place known for its old west/cow town history. Dr. Long knew she wanted to be a family physician so that she could care for patients of all ages and in all settings. “As a doctor, I want to be there for my patients in every step of their care, which is why being able to deliver babies, help with surgeries, as well as care for them on an outpatient basis is a big priority,” she said. “Helping them in the happy and hard times is what a family physician does.” Dr. Long’s journey to becoming a family physician started at the University of Kansas School of Medicine. After graduation, she completed her residency at Smoky Hill Family Medicine Residency Program (SHFMRP). From there, Dr. Long went to Abilene, KS – another community known for its old west history - where she practiced full-scope family medicine before returning to SFHC in 2011 to serve as SHFMRP’s Associate Director. In addition to her role at SHFMRP, she is an Assistant Clinical Professor in the Department of Family and Community Medicine at KUMC- Wichita and Assistant Clerkship Director for Family Medicine rotation at KUMC- Salina. Dr. Long’s clinical interests include procedural medicine, OB care, and point of care sonography. Around the office, Dr. Long is known for her contagious positive energy. Her favorite thing about being a family physician is “delivering babies and then watching them grow while still taking care of the whole family.” Dr. Long’s work in the clinic and with the SHFMRP earned her the Kansas Exemplary Teaching Award by the Kansas Academy of Family Physicians in 2017. When she’s not teaching or seeing patients, Dr. Long likes to spend time with her husband and two kids. Something you may not know about Dr. Long is that, throughout high school and college, she taught dance lessons to help pay for her education.
